Shop has a different bread

It arrived on Thursday. It is a sourdough. It has a hole structure that several customers have described as open and one has described as a swindle.

The shop has begun stocking a sourdough loaf.

It appeared on Thursday, second from the left, in the space previously occupied by the rolls. It is £3.40. The usual loaf remains available at £1.55 and its position has not changed.

Reception

Nine loaves were ordered. Seven sold on the first day, which the shop describes as encouraging and which others have attributed to curiosity.

Views on it are held firmly.

Supporters note that it keeps for four days rather than two, which for anyone driving to the big shop once a fortnight is not a small consideration. Critics have raised the price, the crust, and what one customer described as “the holes”.

“I paid three pounds forty and a third of it is air. I am not against a hole. I am against paying for it.”

The shop’s position

The shop has been clear that the usual loaf is not going anywhere and that this was never the plan.

The sourdough was ordered because it was asked for four times in three weeks, all four by people who have moved here since 2024, and because the supplier had it on the same van.

Both will now be stocked. Rolls return on Tuesday.
