A second sourdough loaf appeared in the shop on Thursday.
It comes from a different bakery on a different van and is £3.10, being thirty pence below the incumbent. The crust is darker. It is, by common agreement, a slightly smaller loaf.
There are now four breads on a shelf that held two in July.
Movements
Mrs Kerr, who has bought the first sourdough every Thursday since it was introduced and who spoke publicly in its favour at the time, was observed on Thursday purchasing the second.
She has not commented. She was asked, in a friendly way, at the counter, and said it was for a recipe.
Nobody has established what the recipe is.
“I stock what people ask for. Four people asked for one, then two people asked for the other. I am not running a competition and I would be grateful if it stopped being described as one.”

The position of the original loaf
The plain loaf at £1.55 continues to outsell both sourdoughs combined by a factor of roughly six and has never been under any threat whatsoever, a point the shop has now made three times and which is included here at its request.
Rolls are unaffected.
The shop has asked that no further items be written about the bread. This newspaper has agreed, subject to developments.
